A Review of the Environmental Safety of the Cry1Ab Protein

Agriculture & Food Systems Institute
January 1, 2011

This document provides a comprehensive review of information and data relevant to the environmental risk assessment of Cry1Ab. The gene for this protein was isolated from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. Kurstaki strain HD-1. When expressed in transgenic plants, the Cry1Ab protein exhibits highly selective insecticidal activity against a narrow range of lepidopteran insects such as European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis).
