HLPDAB: Fourth Consultative Meeting on Regulatory Cooperation – Advancing the Policy Approaches Document

APEC member economies continue to engage through the High Level Policy Dialogue on Agricultural Biotechnology (HLPDAB) to strengthen sustained information sharing within APEC and enhance regulatory cooperation around agricultural biotechnology. Discussions at the HLPDAB over the years have highlighted efforts towards impactful regulatory and policy solutions for agricultural biotechnologies, with the objective of reducing barriers to innovation and international trade.

The Policy Approaches Document, one such effort, was envisioned as a useful tool for advancing regional cooperation on agricultural biotechnology regulation. Following a series of stakeholder consultations, an outline of this document was presented at a workshop on regulatory cooperation at the HLPDAB in 2023. After this workshop and following HLPDAB plenary, during which APEC member economies expressed recognition of such a resource’s value in promoting trade in the region, the Agriculture and Food Systems Institute (AFSI) hosted an additional series of consultative meetings to gather input from member economies and, with this input, developed a draft of the Policy Approaches Document and a companion website. Both were presented and discussed at the HLPDAB in 2024.

This is the fourth discussion session in the series of consultative meetings organized by AFSI. The purpose of this consultation is to gather input from member economies on the utility, effectiveness, and ways to improve the Policy Approaches Document, as well as discuss opportunities for member economies to contribute to this resource.
