This course introduces the key concepts of problem formulation for the environmental risk assessment of genetically engineered crops.

Objectives

You will learn what problem formulation is, how it is an integral part of the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of genetically engineered crops. You will also walk through corresponding examples to demonstrate these concepts when conducting environmental risk assessments.

The approach to ERA presented in this course does not preclude compliance with international agreements like CODEX Alimentarius or the Cartagena Protocol.

Course Goals

  1. The goal of this course is to help risk assessors and risk managers to understand what problem formulation (PF) is and how it is an integral part of the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of genetically engineered crops. You will learn what problem formulation is and how it can be used.
  2. This course does not substitute for your country’s laws and regulations regarding compliance with specific regulatory data requirements, and it is not guidance on how to conduct ERAs. This course does not cover issues relating to food or feed safety.
