Course Overview

This course will describe how genetic engineering can be used to supplement the genetic variation in animals that is essential for production improvements through selection. This course will discuss how genetic engineering techniques can be used to delete or alter existing genes or introduce new genetic sequences into livestock. The course will highlight obstacles in genetic improvement in animals and discuss opportunities for improved production for genetically engineered livestock.

Course Objective

Course participants will learn about advancements in genetic engineering in animals that have been demonstrated in laboratory settings and their application in livestock production.

Course Goals

  1. Master a basic understanding of how DNA can be cut and repaired, and how this information is applied to genetic engineering techniques.
  2. Describe how these techniques can be used to enhance or supplement the genetic variation in livestock.
  3. Discuss how these techniques have been used to genetically engineer animals for improved production, disease resistance, and to reduce the environmental impact of livestock production.

Keywords

Genetic engineering, disease resistance, environmental impact, nutrient reduction

Table of Contents

  • Lesson 1: Limitations to genetic improvement of livestock through standard selection and the advantages of genetic engineering.
  • Lesson 2: Advancements in livestock production made through genetic engineering.
  • Lesson 3: Implementation of genetically engineered animals in livestock production.
